Gentle, Effective Chiropractic Care for Boulder Babies

It can be unsettling to notice your baby always turning their head to the same side, struggling to nurse on one breast, or developing a flat spot on the back or side of their head. Many Boulder moms come to us worried that something is “off,” only to learn their little one is experiencing torticollis — a very common and very treatable condition in newborns.

If you’re seeing your baby favor one direction, resist tummy time, cry when turning their head, or sleep with their head tilted the same way every time, you’re not imagining it. And you’re not alone. Torticollis can make feeding, bonding, and daily routines more challenging — but with the right support, babies respond beautifully.

At Evol.v Chiropractic, we specialize in gentle newborn chiropractic care that helps restore comfortable, full neck movement so feeding, sleeping, and development can unfold naturally.

What Is Infant Torticollis?

Torticollis occurs when a baby has tightness or imbalance in the muscles of the neck — often the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) or the surrounding musculature. This tension pulls the head or chin in a particular direction, making it difficult (and uncomfortable) for the baby to rotate fully or hold their head in a neutral position.

Signs of Torticollis or Head Preference

Your baby may have torticollis if they:

  • Consistently turn their head to one side

  • Have a flat spot on one side of the head (plagiocephaly)

  • Nurse well on one breast but struggle on the other

  • Cry or resist when you try to turn their head

  • Tilt their head or keep their chin toward one shoulder

  • Prefer to look one way during sleep or car seat time

  • Have difficulty during tummy time

These patterns can appear from birth or show up gradually over the first few weeks of life.

What Causes Torticollis?

Torticollis is common, especially when:

  • Baby was positioned tightly in the womb

  • Baby descended quickly or slowly through the birth canal

  • Birth involved interventions (vacuum, forceps), long pushing stages, or cesarean delivery

  • Baby spent prolonged time in one head position

  • There is underlying tension in the spine, jaw, or cranial bones

Even the gentlest birth can introduce strain or imbalance to a newborn’s neck and upper spine. Babies simply need help releasing it.

How Chiropractic Helps With Infant Torticollis

At Evol.v Chiropractic, we use very gentle, specific, and soothing techniques to address the underlying tension contributing to torticollis.

Our newborn chiropractic care focuses on:

  • Releasing tight muscles in the neck and upper spine.  Light fingertip pressure helps unwind the compensations causing the head to tilt or rotate only one way.

  • Improving mobility of the joints and cranial system.  When the spine and cranial bones move freely, babies gain comfort and full range of motion.

  • Supporting the nervous system.  A calm, regulated nervous system helps babies relax, feed more effectively, and engage more during tummy time.

  • Preventing or improving flat spots (plagiocephaly).  Once the baby can turn both ways comfortably, their head shape can improve naturally.

  • Improving breastfeeding position and latch

Many latch issues are connected with torticollis, because babies can’t fully rotate or open their jaw evenly. Moms often notice easier feeds after just a few adjustments.

Parents frequently tell us that after care, their baby is more relaxed, more symmetrical, and finally comfortable turning both ways.

A Soft, Nurturing Approach for Your Baby

Our care is baby-led, calming, and paced slowly. Adjustments are incredibly gentle — often described by parents as “barely more than a touch.” Babies often melt into the table, yawn, stretch, or fall asleep during their session.

We also partner with Boulder lactation consultants, pediatric specialists, and other infant care providers when additional support is helpful. You never have to navigate this alone.

What to Expect at Your Baby’s Appointment

During your newborn visit, we will:

  • Review your baby’s feeding patterns, sleep, and head-turning habits

  • Assess neck range of motion and overall body balance

  • Gently evaluate cranial, jaw, and spinal alignment

  • Provide soft, precise chiropractic adjustments

  • Show you simple at-home movements to support ongoing improvement

  • Track your baby’s progress closely over a series of visits

Most babies begin showing improved neck mobility within just a few sessions.
